  Richardson was killed during the Namamugi Incident, also known as the Kanagawa incident or Richardson affair. The incident occurred when Richardson and three other Britons were on a sightseeing trip to a temple and refused to dismount from their horses. The samurai bodyguards attacked the group, mortally wounding Richardson. 
• The aftermath

  The incident sparked outrage among Europeans, who felt their extraterritoriality in Japan had been violated. The British demanded compensation from the Satsuma, but the Satsuma refused. In response, the British bombarded Kagoshima in August 1863, which became known as the Anglo-Satsuma War. The Satsuma paid compensation for Richardson's murder and executed a low-ranking samurai for the crime. However, many believed that Narahara and others were most responsible, but they were not punished.
