January 11th - Rising tension between greeks and Turks in Cyprus caused British troops to be sent out

March 15th - Lerner and Loewe's musical My Fair Lady had its premier in New York
March 23rd - Pakistan was declared an Islamic Republic
April 19th - American actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco
June 13th - The last British troops left the Suez Canal Zone
July 26th - President Nasser of Egypt announced nationalization of the Suez Canal. A large number of ships were re-routed around the Cape
September - Serious race riots in Clinton, Tennessee, USA
October 23rd - The Hungarian uprising began with country wide demonstrations
October 25th - 500 Soviet tanks rumbled through Budapest and 100 men women and children were mown down dead by machine guns from the tanks
October 29th - Israeli armed forces invaded Egypt via the Sinai Peninsula
November 1st - The first Premium Bonds went on sale in Britain
November 5th - British and French forces landed in Egypt.
This was regarded by many as a bullying fiasco involving the British.
The United nations deplored Britains action and the United States brought
powerful sanctions to bear on the British economy.

The House of Commons voted to end hanging but the Lords disagreed
The Royal Court Theatre in London saw the first performance of Look Back in Anger by John Osborne
Eisenhower was re elected President of the US
