On December 16th, 1874 the ILN issued its first separate Christmas number enclosed in a coloured wrapper.

(Appendix List no.3) It consisted of two sheets of tales by R. D. Blackmore and George Augustus Sala with two full-page coloured engravings and other black and white ones by leading artists. The wrapper is in green and red showing holly branches and clumps of mistletoe surrounding the title and engraved heading. It is 32 pages long, measures 42 x 30 cm and cost one shilling.The tradition of an ‘extra’ Christmas number continues to this day
